New AGL Lighting Equipment

Uzbekistan Airports, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Uzbekistan, has successfully completed a significant upgrade of the airfield ground lighting system at Fergana International Airport. This modernization project included the installation of airfield signs, approach systems, and Constant Current Regulators (CCRs) supplied by atg airports, as part of an upgrade to CAT-I (ICAO) standards. The new system has been fully commissioned, and a successful flight check has confirmed its functionality and readiness for operations.

The airfield was previously equipped with an outdated OMI “Luch-4u” lighting system, which had been in place since 1984. Over time, this equipment had become both technologically and operationally obsolete, far exceeding its designed service life by more than three cycles. The old system was only capable of supporting approach operations from one landing direction, and its performance fell well below modern requirements. Illumination levels were inadequate, often resulting in operational challenges and frequent complaints from flight crews regarding its reliability.

Given the dual-purpose role of the airfield, which serves both civil and military aviation under the Ministry of Defence, a mutual decision was made to invest in a state- of-the-art lighting system.

The installation of new airfield signs and CCRs has significantly enhanced the airport’s infrastructure. The upgraded system allows for CAT-I precision approaches from both runway directions, improving operational efficiency and adaptability to various conditions.

This modernization represents a major step forward in aligning Fergana International Airport with international standards. The dual-directional capability of the new lighting system provides increased flexibility for flight operations, streamlining arrivals and departures regardless of weather or time of day. By modernizing the airfield, Fergana is better equipped to accommodate future growth in air traffic while also fulfilling its strategic importance as a regional hub for Uzbekistan’s civil and military aviation sectors.

With these upgrades, Fergana International Airport has bolstered its infrastructure, ensuring that it remains a vital part of Uzbekistan’s transportation network while preparing to meet the demands of modern aviation.
