Airfield Ground Lighting cables (AGL cables) connect the Constant Current Regulator (CCR) to the primary windings on the runway transformers (AGL primary cables), and the secondary outputs from the transformers to the runway lights (AGL secondary cables).

Both are critical to the safe and continuous functioning of the airfield, which is why only high-quality AGL cable purpose-made for the job should be used. Airfield cables are attached using dedicated primary and secondary connector kits, for secure and robust connections.

High-Quality AGL Cables

AGL cables, transformers and connector kits are available in a variety of specifications for both primary and secondary AGL applications.

AGL Cables

ATG Airports’ AGL primary cable is single-core and designed for continuous operation at voltages of up to 5kV to ground. It complies with industry standards including FAA AC 150/5345-7D (L-824) and ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual Part 5, Electrical Services.

We can supply several specifications, including FLYCY, EPR, PCP, braided screen cable and termite protection. The standard drum size of 1kM can also be adjusted on requested.

AGL Transformers

High-quality AGL transformers isolate the airfield lights from the primary circuit, creating a separation point that protects the output equipment connected to the transformer’s secondary circuit.

ATG Airports supply transformers approved by IEC and certified by FAA, with a wide span of power ratings and current capacities. We can also provide suitable AGL secondary cable to connect all of your airfield luminaires to your transformers.

AGL Connector Kits

Making a solid connection is key to the robust and reliable operation of your airfield ground lighting. ATG Airports’ purpose-made AGL connector kits give you that reliability and the peace of mind that your lights and transformers are correctly wired in.

Our connector kits are easy to install, with options available for screened and unscreened cables of varying sizes. Once installed, the connection is made watertight, protecting against ingress during poor weather conditions on exposed and remote airfields.

Why are AGL cables used in airport applications?

AGL cables provide a long list of benefits, allowing airfield operators to overcome the specific challenges faced when connecting airport ground lighting – both the luminaires and the AGL transformers – to the CCR.

Some of these benefits include:

  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with all relevant industry standards by choosing AGL primary cable certified by FAA and ICAO, and approved by IEC.
  • Durability: Purpose-made high-quality AGL cables are built to withstand poor weather conditions, termite attacks and other threats of mechanical damage.
  • Performance: High power ratings and current capacities ensure your AGL cables perform well, with low attenuation even over long distances of AGL secondary cable.
  • Safety: Protect against airfield ground lighting failures, while also protecting maintenance workers against electrical connections exposed to water and other weather ingress.

This list goes on and on, and each product offers its own unique benefits when used as part of a complex and carefully designed airfield ground lighting circuit.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are AGL cables used for?

AGL cables distribute a mains power supply to the lights used in the airfield’s ground lighting circuit (AGL circuit). Typically, a high-voltage supply is provided via a Constant Current Regulator, or CCR, to ensure consistent power quality.

This power supply is then passed through one or more AGL transformers, which each supply an output to one or more lights on the airfield. The transformers can step down the voltage to the luminaire’s operating voltage, and also provide an isolation point for each part of the AGL circuit.

What is the difference between primary and secondary AGL cables?

AGL primary cable is used to connect AGL transformers to the CCR (Constant Current Regulator). They are named ‘primary’ cables because they supply the power to the primary windings on the transformers.

AGL secondary cable connects the transformer’s output to the individual airfield luminaires, supplying them with the power they need to operate. Again, the name ‘secondary’ cable refers to the secondary windings on the transformers.

What standards do our AGL cables comply with?

ATG Airports’ AGL cables comply with industry standards including FAA AC 150/5345-7D (L-824) and ICAO Aerodrome Design Manual Part 5, Electrical Services. You can find out more in our downloadable product data sheets, which can be saved in PDF format and/or printed for future reference and proof of compliance.

If you have any questions about any of our AGL cables, transformers and connector kits, or specific standards you need to comply with, please contact our team and we will recommend a suitable product.

What is the expected lifespan of AGL cables?

The lifespan of all AGL assets depends on three factors: design, installation and maintenance. Both AGL primary cable and AGL secondary cable are no exceptions to this. Correct installation of high-quality cable, protection against mechanical shock, excessive vibration and termite damage, and watertight connections will all extend the longevity of the cables.

With a variety of cable specifications, including braided screens for extra mechanical protection, and the ingress protection of our watertight AGL connector kits, ATG Airports give you everything you need to keep your AGL circuits in good working order for as long as possible.

Which cable do I need for my airfield lighting system?

If you’re still not sure which type of cable you need for your airfield lighting system, please contact our team. We can offer a complete design and build service, including recommending the correct size and type of AGL primary and secondary cable for every part of your airfield’s ground lighting circuit.
