A £75 million runway resurfacing project is currently underway at RAF Lossiemouth – home to four front-line Typhoon Squadrons responsible for holding Quick Reaction Alert duties, which may see them scrambled at a moment’s notice against any airborne threat to the United Kingdom.
The runways, associated taxiways, and aprons were originally designed for fast-jet operations rather than larger multi-engine aircraft. With the arrival of the P-8A Poseidon Maritime Patrol Aircraft, it is necessary for the two runways to be stripped, strengthened and resurfaced. In some areas, widening of the surfaces is also required to accommodate the larger aircraft.
As part of the refurbishment program, the airfield lighting system across two runways, including four approach systems and multiple taxiways is to be renewed. ATG airports has been successful in securing the project for the installation and replacement of the airfield ground lighting equipment. The works also include the installation of high mast lighting on the apron areas, the refurbishment of all the substations, including the replacement of LV supplies and the supply and installation of over 100 airfield signs.
The provision of a safe and healthy working environment is essential to ensure success on all project works. But in these difficult times, and through our continual improvement program, extra procedures for working at a safe social distance have been included as part of standard operating practices.
A tight delivery schedule for the implementation of all works was necessary owing to the strategic importance of the operations conducted by the Royal Air Force. The project is currently on program and preparations for a handover are beginning to commence.
